Course Description: The focus of this course is sedation of the pediatric patient receiving dental care. The purpose is to prepare the participant to deliver safe and effective enteral (oral) moderate sedation to the patient under the age of 13 years. This course is designed to meet requirements for a pediatric enteral moderate sedation (OMS) permit in California and most other states. Major topics to be discussed during the three days of the course include: the development of guidelines for pediatric OMS, physiology and psychology of the child, sedation techniques in children, including N20-02, intranasal, intravenous and general anesthesia, oral moderate sedation including pharmacology and protocols, monitoring and record keeping, physical evaluation, medically compromised and special needs patients, and management of unintended consequences (sedation failures and oversedation). Issues of sedation in adult patients will also be discussed.
